Out of Time by professorwagstaff Out of Time by professorwagstaff
You are looking at my rendition of the time machine from the Back to the Future movies. The DeLorean is simply one of the coolest  time travel  machines ever.  There were some aspects of this drawing that downright fun to draw and others I hated (think tires) .  I hope you enjoy.  I drew this on Bristol Vellum paper and used pencils ranging from B to 9B.  Any and all suggestions and critiques are received with open ears, especially if you can give suggestions about drawing tires.  They are the hair of cars!

Thanks for looking.  Have a wonderful day.

Always a great technique with pencils which manages to define shapes and volumes perfectly despite not using any colours to give light and shadows. I find interesting the choice of representing it from behind, but also it's the best view for its distinctive motor and time-travel equipment (by the way, I didn't remember the plate was "OUTATIME", it made me smile when I saw it). Even without colours, it's clearly visible from which angle the sunlight comes. The use of different traits and shades, given by different pencils, makes the car's surface smooth and the asphalt rougher. What really sells this picture is the reflection on the road, something that happens only on hot roads, so the pic is not as cold as it seems, once you notice it. Overall excellent work for all the details, expecially the rims, and are not forgotten even the insides, a perfect example being the engine view and the time selector, realized with the same cure present in all the pic.

I am hard-pressed to find a flaw in this. However, the back license plate is somewhat hard to read. Thankfully, I love the Back to the Future movies and remember that it says "OUTATIME" or something similar. At first I thought it said "Cut at me" and I couldn't figure out what that meant. lol. Other than that small detail, this is fantastic. It would be difficult to pull off and I'm sure it would be hard to find a reference for it, but you may consider having more detail in the reflection. The car should have more parts underneath than this shows. Also, I don't remember if there is a rear view mirror on the car in Back to the Future. It's just food for thought. You are a very skilled artist. Great work!

Thank you.  No one ever gets those future movies right but they are fun.  It seems the more we change the more we stay the same.

Yes!! That's why i love those movies who predict some back in the past life really close to nature, as a probable future! :D

Hi, I found this deviation through :iconprojectcomment: ,

Man oh man, just the thought of doing all the intricate parts of a vehicle like this really makes me shudder! You obviously put a lot of work into this, and it looks really great! The more I look at it, the more aspects of the vehicle I see. I can really appreciate that as well as imagine all the time and effort it would have taken to put all those nooks and crannies in there. I see the front interior and am instantly reminded of the time being set to travel to. The reflection of the car is a nice touch that makes it have a real presence. The only thing I am not clear on is where it would be to have a reflection like that. Is it on a highly polished show room floor? The background really doesn't offer any clues about where it is. (I only watched the first movie so forgive me if You placed it somewhere in one of the sequels.)

About the tires, I think maybe what is off about them is that the treads end abruptly. I don't draw vehicles, but when I think of the tires on my family's vehicles, it seems like the treads should flatten out a bit and show some markings before completely flattening to the side of the tire. Mind you, the vehicles I am thinking of are newer than this. And it probably depends a little on the maker of the tire too. The inner rimlooks good, the bolts and spokes (my technical terminology is failing me--it would be spokes on a bicycle) are nicely detailed and the overall form looks good. On both the tires and everything else the proportions are phenomenal.
Always a pleasure to see your works. Keep on creating!

Hello.  Thank you so much for the comment. Sorry for the late reply I was away for 10 days without a computer.  The reference photo indicated that the car was on a shiny service with no background. In my drawings you usually see what I see, I never improvise.  Thanks again for your very kind words I really appreciate it.

I freakin' love these movies!  I'll start by saying you nailed the back engine part!!  All the cool little details really bring out the form of the engine.  Your proportions are impeccable as well!  The depth of so many of the little nuanced recesses and nooks and crannies of the surface of the car is great and shows through pretty immediately.  A small bit as well.. but the reflection in the floor really just makes this car seem like it's really there.

There is really only one thing I can detect in this to nit-pick on.  The rear, driver's side wheel does not seem entirely accurate.  Maybe the top is just a tiny bit pointy or something like that.  This is a very small thing though!  Overall this is just awesome!!    The angle of the car and the small details like some of the wires running along the sides and that reflection on the ground!

Really great work on this!

Hey Brice.  Thank you very much for your comment on my drawing. I really appreciate the time you took to make the comment.  The tires on all my car drawings are tricky. I hate drawing tires like I hate drawing hair. Thanks again! Have a great day.

I totally get that with the tires.  And, as I said, it was pretty nit-picky.  It's an amazing piece!  I'm sure hair would come naturally to you after a couple tries if your other work is any indication!

Me? Not sure, because any time in the past women weren't in such a good place!

So it would be in the future sometime.
